What is my USDA Hardiness Zone?

Sometimes called “growing zones,” hardiness zones refer to a map developed by the USDA that separates the United States into regions based on the average low winter temperatures. The USDA Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones and further divided into 5-degree F half-zones. Click here to look up your hardiness zone by zip code.

    When will my plants ship?

Find your shipping region to see when the approximate shipping timeframe will be. All orders are filled in the order they are received, with the oldest pre-orders shipping first.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    • Product Description
    • Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor), also known as Bicolor Oak, is a magnificent, long-lived native powerhouse that effortlessly fuses breathtaking structural beauty with unmatched urban resilience.

A stately icon of bottomlands and low-lying river edges, the Swamp White Oak is one of the most adaptable and toughest shade trees in North America. Reaching 50 to 60 feet with a broad, symmetrical, rounded canopy, it is celebrated for its unique two-toned foliage that shimmers silver in the breeze. This tree effortlessly conquers everything from backyard swamps and heavy clay to compacted city soil and asphalt heat.

      Key Features:

      • Keystone Wildlife Tree: Oaks host more caterpillar species than any other native tree, and Swamp White Oak's sweet acorns feed ducks, turkey, deer, squirrels, and songbirds.
      • Shimmering "Bicolor" Canopy: Features striking leaves that are lustrous dark green on top with a velvety, silvery-white underside, creating a gorgeous flashing effect in the wind before turning a warm yellow-bronze in autumn.
      • Loves Wet Ground: Thrives in poorly drained bottomlands, rain gardens, and stream edges, tolerating periodic flooding, yet adapts to average garden soils.
      • Handsome Two-Toned Foliage: Lustrous dark-green leaves with silvery-white undersides shimmer in the breeze and turn yellow-bronze in fall.
      • Tough & Long-Lived: An adaptable, city-tolerant shade tree that can live for centuries with a strong, rounded canopy. Highly resistant to city pollution, compacted soils, and road salt—making it a dependable, long-lived shade tree for modern suburban and urban yards.
      • Easier to Establish: Features a naturally shallower, more fibrous root system than other oaks, making it much easier to successfully plant and establish in the home landscape.
      • Eco-Friendly: Grown non-GMO and neonicotinoid-free to ensure a healthy ecosystem for your local wildlife.

This tree ships in a one gallon container with a robust, established root system, promoting quick establishment and growth after planting.

      Why Choose Swamp White Oak?

Swamp White Oak is a generational legacy tree that solves modern landscaping dilemmas. If you have a low spot in your yard where water pools after rain, or heavy clay that chokes out other plants, this tree doesn't just survive—it thrives. It offers the majestic canopy of a classic oak on an accelerated timeline, establishing quickly thanks to its adaptable root structure. As it grows, it transforms your property into a high-traffic wildlife hub, feeding early pollinators with its spring catkins and nourishing local fauna with its sweet autumn acorns.

      Planting Tips:

      1. Location: Plant in Full sun to part shade with moist to wet, poorly drained heavy loams and clays; acidic; adaptable and tolerant of both wet ground and occasional dryness.
      2. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, it tolerates occasional dry spells.
      3. Maintenance: Extremely low-maintenance. To safeguard against Oak Wilt disease, restrict any structural pruning to the dead of winter when the tree is fully dormant.

For more information on planting, view our How to Plant Your Native Plants guide and other planting tips in the Garden for Wildlife Learning Center.

Bring the shimmering beauty and legendary strength of the Swamp White Oak to your property—a resilient native titan engineered to turn tough, wet spots into a thriving wildlife haven for centuries to come.

Oh my gosh we so love these butterfly milkweed plants! Not only have we had monarchs visit us but several black swallowtail butterflies as well. Every time we look at these plants they make us smile. And to think we are helping out the butterfly population at the same time!

    Worth the Investment

I have been so impressed with each delivery I've received. The packaging is superb, keeping the plants in a safe, healthy state during shipping. Each plant has been healthy and strong, transplanting and thriving. Every single plant I ordered and put in my garden last year, came back strong this year - acting every bit like a 3rd year plant. I love my 3 Little Bluestem plugs and can't wait to watch them grow next year. Absolutely worth the cost!

    Beautiful and Resilient!

I planted them this spring so no flowers yet but I did accidentally break the stem for two of the plants which had ALL the leaves. I thought the plant was a goner BUT it came back. The root system was strong even for the little plants and it is back to thriving again.
