The short answer: Sometimes!
Whether a plant blooms in its first season depends on the species and when it is planted. Native species planted in the spring that typically bloom in the summer or fall may produce a few flowers in their first year.
However, most perennials follow the Sleep, Creep, Leap growth cycle:
Year 1 (Sleep): The plant "sleeps" above ground while working hard below, focusing its energy on establishing a deep, healthy root system.
Year 2 (Creep): The plant "creeps" as it begins to fill out and establish its presence in your garden.
Year 3 (Leap): The plant "leaps" into full maturity with robust growth and abundant blooms.
While you might see some color this year, remember that a plant's first priority is building a strong foundation for years of beauty to come!
