Sweetspire (Itea virginica) is a versatile, low-maintenance native shrub that offers fragrant white flowers, brilliant fall foliage, and year-round interest. This mound-shaped, spreading shrub grows up to 10 feet tall, with arching branches adorned with drooping, tassel-like clusters of small white flowers in late spring to early summer. The sweetly scented blooms are a magnet for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, making it a perfect addition to pollinator gardens and naturalized landscapes.
As the seasons change, its lush green foliage transforms into brilliant shades of red, burgundy, and purple, often persisting well into winter. Sweetspire is also semi-evergreen in warmer climates, adding year-round texture to the landscape.
Highly adaptable, this shrub thrives in a wide range of conditions, including moist, clay, or poorly drained soils, making it ideal for rain gardens, erosion control, and woodland understories.
Why Grow Sweetspire?
- Pollinator & Bird Friendly: Produces nectar-rich flowers that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds while providing cover and shelter for birds.
- Fragrant, Long-Lasting Blooms: Elegant, cascading white flower spires bloom from late spring into summer, opening gradually from base to tip.
- Spectacular Fall Color: Leaves turn brilliant shades of red, burgundy, and purple, often persisting into winter.
- Thrives in Wet or Dry Soil: Grows well in moist woodlands, rain gardens, and streambanks, yet tolerates drought once established.
- Erosion Control & Slope Stabilization: Spreading root system helps prevent soil erosion in wet areas and on slopes.
- Shade-Tolerant & Versatile: Can grow in full sun to part shade, making it a great understory shrub.
- Pollinator-Safe: Grown non-GMO and free of harmful neonicotinoids, promoting a healthy ecosystem for pollinators and wildlife.
Available in one-gallon containers to establish a pollinator-friendly, low-maintenance landscape.
Planting Tips:
- Location: Prefers full sun to part shade for the best flowering and fall color. Thrives in wet, poorly drained soils, making it great for rain gardens, streambanks, and swampy areas. Also does well in clay and drier soils once established.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Tolerates wet soil but should be watered during prolonged drought outside its natural habitat.
- Spacing & Planting: Space plants 3-5 feet apart for mass plantings, or 6-8 feet apart if planting individually. Works well as a shrub border, understory planting, or naturalized hedge.
- Maintenance: Minimal care required. If desired, prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage growth. Leave seed heads and foliage in fall for added winter interest and wildlife support.
