As part of our Premium Pots collection, this 2-gallon Carolina Rose (Rosa carolina) shrub is a mature, high-quality native plant that provides immediate impact for your wildlife garden.
Carolina Rose, also known as pasture rose, is a low-growing native deciduous shrub that brings multi-season beauty and essential habitat to your landscape. In early summer, it produces an abundance of fragrant, bright pink flowers with yellow centers that attract bees and butterflies. After the flowers fade, they mature into showy red hips that provide a crucial food source for songbirds, quail, and small mammals in fall and winter.
This shrub provides excellent year-round cover for wildlife and is a host plant for several sphinx moth species, including the Polyphemus moth. It is also known for its distinctive dark green leaves and prickly stems with needle-like thorns.
Why Grow Carolina Rose?

- Bird-Friendly: The bright red rose hips provide a vital food source for birds and small mammals in the fall and winter.
- Versatile & Adaptable: This shrub is an excellent choice for creating a natural hedge and is tolerant of heat and occasionally dry soil. It is also resistant to rose rosette virus.
- Pollinator-Safe: Grown non-GMO and free of harmful neonicotinoids, promoting a healthy ecosystem for pollinators and wildlife.

Planting Tips
- Location: Plant in a full sun to part shade location with moist, well-drained soil. Full sun exposure will lead to the best flowering and disease resistance.
- Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially when establishing the plant.
- Maintenance: Prune in late winter or early spring. The plant spreads via suckering to form loose thickets, making it a good candidate for a mixed hedgerow. For stem-nesting native bees, cut back dead stems to 12 to 24 inches and leave them standing.
