Add year-round structure, brilliant winter color, and a touch of history to your landscape with Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria). Native to the southeastern United States, this picturesque, broadleaf evergreen shrub (or small tree) is prized for its versatility and resilience. It features small, dark green, shiny leaves and pale gray bark marked with distinctive white patches. In fall and winter, female plants produce prodigious amounts of bright red berries that persist through the cold months, creating a cheerful accent in the gray winter landscape.
Yaupon Holly is steeped in cultural significance. It is the only native North American plant containing caffeine; Native American tribes used the leaves and twigs to prepare a ceremonial "black drink" tea, similar to South American yerba mate. Ecologically, it is a powerhouse: the dense branches offer nesting sites for birds, while the berries provide high-energy food for cardinals, mockingbirds, and small mammals in late winter. Adaptable to a wide range of conditions—from sandy dunes to wet swamps—this tough native is perfect for hedges, screens, or as a stunning specimen plant.

Why Choose Yaupon Holly?
Yaupon Holly is the ultimate "problem solver" for the garden. Whether you have dry sandy soil, a spot prone to flooding, or a location exposed to salt spray, this shrub thrives where others fail. It is an excellent alternative to non-native boxwoods for hedges, offering the same dense, shapable growth with added ecological benefits. Plus, growing your own "American tea" plant adds a unique conversation starter to your garden.
Planting Tips:
- Location: Versatile! Thrives in full sun to deep shade. Full sun encourages a thicker canopy and more fruit production.
- Watering: Tolerates drought well once established but can also handle wet soils and poor drainage.
- Pollination: Plants are dioecious (separate male and female plants). You need a male pollinator in the area for the female plants to produce berries. These plants ship unsexed from the grower and we can't guarantee both male and female plants in your order. We recommend purchasing 3 or 4 shrubs to increase the likelihood of berry production.
- Maintenance: Prune in winter to shape or control size. Remove root suckers unless you want the plant to naturalize and form a thicket.
